The Weight of Pretending
Leila shared this moment with me during our first coaching call last week, her voice breaking as she described the scene:
“I barely made it through dinner. The moment everyone left, I ran upstairs to our bedroom and broke down completely.”
Just minutes before, she’d been downstairs at her family gathering, smiling and nodding as her sister gushed, “You and Harvey are so good together! Seriously!”
Those words — meant as a compliment — had been the final straw.
Because what her sister didn’t know was that just three months ago, Leila had discovered Harvey’s affair. What looked like a perfect marriage from the outside was being held together by nothing but sheer will and silent tears.
“I felt like I was suffocating,” Leila told me. “Everyone talking about what a great couple we are, how lucky I am, how perfect our marriage is… while I’m dying inside, remembering the text messages I found, the lies he told, that woman’s name I can’t get out of my head.”
The argument that followed after their guests left was inevitable:
“Why couldn’t you just play along?” Harvey demanded.
“Because it’s killing me!” Leila screamed back. “Do you have any idea what it feels like to stand there and smile while they talk about how perfect we are? When I know what you did?”
This scene plays out in bedrooms and living rooms across the country. The exhausting dance of keeping up appearances. The rage that builds with every well-meaning compliment about your marriage. The pain of pretending.
If you’re living this reality right now, I want you to know three things:
You’re not alone in this struggle
You don’t have to keep pretending
There’s a way through this pain
One of our clients described it perfectly: “The hardest part wasn’t the betrayal itself — it was having to act normal around everyone else while my world was burning down.”
But here’s what she discovered, and what I want you to know:
The energy you’re spending maintaining this facade? It could be spent on real healing instead.
The strength you’re using to keep up appearances? It could be channelled into authentic recovery.
The tears you’re hiding? They could become part of your transformation story.
You don’t have to keep carrying this burden alone.
You don’t have to keep smiling through the pain.
You don’t have to keep pretending.
There’s another way.
