Hardware store “No Gays Allowed” is selling controversial anti-gay merchandise

Hardware store in Grainger County, Tennessee, started selling homophobic merchandise.

As a reminder, if you by any chance missed the headlines back in June, this is the same that hardware store when the “No Gays Allowed” sign was flagged. Owner of the store later changed “No Gays Allowed” sign to be more “nicer” with one saying “We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone who would violate our rights of freedom of speech & freedom of religion.”

They recently added new products in their line, including “NO GAYS ALLOWED” caps and bumper stickers printed with “Choose God or Gays”.

The owner of Amyx Hardware & Roofing Supplies, Jeff Amyx, who is also a Baptist minister, made a statement to WATE 6-TV, saying that: “God created Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.” Oh well, we guess we didn’t see that one coming.

He continued saying: “I just don’t agree with their lifestyle. I don’t want any part of it. I don’t want it around me and I’ll never agree with it.”

Gwen Schablik, who is in cooperation with the Tennessee Equality Project, reported: “This is definitely hurtful. The fact that he is selling merchandise that is saying ‘choose God or Gays’. It doesn’t really help those who are Christian and identify as LGBT as myself.”

Hardware store owner in Tennessee changed “No Gay Allowed” sign to be “nicer”

Just a few days after Supreme Court’s ruling legalizing same-sex marriage, a Baptist minister and owner of the Amyx Hardware & Roofing Supplies in Grainger County, made a sign saying “No Gays Allowed” on the window of his store in Tennessee.

He changed the controversial sign so it now reads “We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone who would violate our rights of freedom of speech & freedom of religion.”

As Amyx reported to WATE 6 in Knoxville, he said: “People told me I ought to do it a little bit more, make it a little nicer because I’m very blunt person.”

He continues: “The sign are raising some questions in the Washburn community about how Amyx would even know someone was gay”

Amyx expressed he has no intention on removing the sign and is not worried about how it might affect his business. He stated: “The reason I put up the sign is to let homosexual people know that there are Christian people that are willing to take a stand.”

Also, several County clerks have stopped performing marriage ceremonies or even resigned. As Casey Dorton, Hickman County Clerk, reported to WKRN: “I made the decision to stop performing all marriage ceremonies because of my religious beliefs. I just couldn’t do it. I want to be honest with people about the reason.”

Sign “No Gays Allowed” appeared on hardware store in Tennessee

Jeff Amyx, owner of Amyx Hardware & Roofing Supplies in Tennessee, Grainger County, puts up a sign with handwritten “NO GAYS ALLOWED”. Also, Amyx is a Baptist minister who said: “I’m standing for what I believe in.” with no intention of removing the sign.

The sign was handwritten on big blank piece of paper, 8-by-10 inch in size, and placed it right in the window of his business store.

The owner, Jeff Amyx, said he personally taped the controversial sign as a disagreement to the Supreme Court’s resolution to legalize same-sex marriage across the nation, and because he feels that lesbian and gay relationships are against his religion.

Following a report from Knoxville TV station WBIR, belief crossed his mind Monday morning “that homosexual people are not afraid to stand for what they believe in.” He goes on saying that “it showed him that Christian people should be brave enough to stand for what they believe in.”

Amyx made a statement to WBIR saying: “They gladly stand for what they believe in, why can’t i?” He clearly expressed that he has no intention to take down the sign, saying: “They believe their way is right, I believe it’s wrong. But yet I’m going to take more persecution than them because I’m standing for what I believe in.”

Science behind “Gaydar”: truth or myth?

Study conducted to find out if there is actually any science behind “gaydar”, or it is all just based on stereotypes.

Researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, with William Cox as team leader, decided to find out. They published their results in the Journal of Sex Research.

The study was conducted with a selection of 50 gay and 55 straight men’s faces, who were paired with a statement that had to be rated by a group of volunteers as either gay, neutral or straight.

Using example: respectively – “he likes shopping”, “he likes to read” or “he likes football”

From participants was expected to pair what they thought which picture-statement constructs belonged to straight or gay men. Results here showed that they were much more likely to associate a man as gay based on statement judged to be stereotypically gay. The men’s face had no influence on the results.

While testing if picture quality could determine someone to be identified as gay or straight, results showed it really does have influence on whether the picture-statement were judged to be gay or straight. The pictures of straight men were rated as lower quality than the gay men’s pictures.

As it may look like a harmless study, it actually underlines a very serious problem with stereotypes in our society. Sometimes there can be little truth on them, but more often there isn’t. And it looks like “gaydar” is, at the end, just a myth that in some way justifies the judgement of people as straight or gay.

Sir Elton John want to meet with Vladimir Putin to talk about gay rights

Russia was failing to prosecute and prevent homophobic abuse and violence against minorities – reported by Human Rights Watch last year. They also passed a bill in June 2013 that prosecuted anyone who are promoting “homosexual behaviour among minors”.

Sir Elton John said he would like to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and talk about what he called Russian president’s ludicrous attitude about LGBT rights.

Speaking to the BBC, Sir Elton John said he would like to have a discussion with President Putin even though “he may laugh behind my back… and call me an absolute idiot”.

He is in Ukraine at this moment, where he had a meeting with Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko and appealed for the country to provide stronger support to the LGBT community, and for business leaders to not turn away from LGBT employees.

Sir Elton John said: “You are President of Russia, and you go and say stupid things like that?”

He also added that Putin’s attitude regarding gay people rights was “isolating and prejudiced” and “ridiculous”.

He continued saying: “It’s probably pie in the sky… He may laugh behind my back when he shuts the door, and call me an absolute idiot, but at least I can think I have the conscience to say I tried.”
